In 2020 we’re asking our MSPs to divest Scotland from fossil fuels.
The breakdown of our climate threatens millions of peoples lives, and this won’t change until we stop extracting and burning fossil fuels.
The Scottish Parliament can lead this change by divesting their own pensions, and ensuring the new National Investment Bank is fossil free.
Last year Ireland was the first country to divest from fossil fuels, a visionary step towards building a sustainable future. Nicola Sturgeon says Scotland should lead the world on climate change, so we must take similar action.
Why take action now?
- The Scottish Parliament will soon vote on creating a multi-billion pound Scottish National Investment Bank. We need MSPs to demand the Bank funds good, green business or initiatives and never backs fossil fuels.
- The Scottish Parliament’s pensions have no ethical policy, and invest in some of the world’s most polluting oil and gas firms. This approach is under review right now, so raising our voices can help deliver a real change.
Email your MSPs now to ask them to support the Divest Scotland pledge: ‘I pledge to support the Scottish Government and Parliament divesting from fossil fuels and investing in a just transition to a zero carbon economy over an appropriate time-scale.’
By pledging, MSPs will be standing up for climate-friendly investment for our country. When key Scottish Parliament decisions are being made about investment during 2020 and beyond, we can hold them to account and use MSP pledges to ensure Scotland frees itself from fossil fuels.
