Tell your Council: Divest pensions from fossil fuels

A global climate crisis is underway, with extreme weather and rising sea levels threatening the lives of billions of people. Meanwhile, across Scottish Councils continue to invest around £1.2 billion in fossil fuel companies through their pension funds. This is despite many councils declaring a climate emergency.

Local authorities have the power to ensure local workers not only have a pension for their retirement, but also a future worth retiring into. As we recover from the pandemic, we can choose to move away from old systems of investment that keep accelerating the climate crisis. Instead we can invest local money in ways that matter for local people and their future.

Halting the extraction and expansion of fossil fuels is a matter of survival for us all. Our local leaders must act now. Councillors must ask pension fund managers to end their support for the companies driving the climate crisis, and instead invest our common wealth in ways that generate both social and financial return.

Councils across the UK and organisations around the world have already committed to divest fully. It’s time to ask why your council has not.

Email your councillor to call on them to support fossil free council pension funds.
