Sign the petition: No new oil & gas!

The climate is in crisis. Our planet has had enough. The children are on strike. We can’t keep on extracting and burning fossil fuels like there’s no tomorrow. It is time to start planning for a fossil-free future.

The good news is that the Scottish Government and the UK Parliament have declared a climate emergency. But real climate leadership means making difficult decisions now. It means saying no to new oil and gas in the North Sea, by cancelling the current and future licensing rounds. It also means massively expanding renewable energy, creating decent jobs, and protecting the rights and livelihoods of workers and communities currently dependent on high carbon industries.

With public support for serious climate action stronger than ever, we must seize this opportunity to move beyond fossil fuels.

Sign the petition calling on Nicola Sturgeon and the UK Prime Minister to end oil and gas exploration and plan for a just transition now!

To the Prime Minister and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon:

To address the climate emergency, we must rapidly stop burning and extracting fossil fuels. This means your Governments must end the policy of maximising economic recovery and say ‘no’ to new oil and gas extraction in the North Sea and UK waters, cancel the current and future offshore licensing rounds.

You must urgently develop a plan to move away from fossil fuels to renewable energy, to create decent jobs and protect the rights and livelihoods of workers and communities currently dependent on high carbon industries.

Successive governments have supported, invested in, and lowered taxes for the oil industry. Now it is time to redirect support towards building the new clean economy.

We call on you to:
  • Stop issuing new licenses and permits for oil and gas extraction projects now, and revoke undeveloped licenses;
  • Start a just transition away from fossil fuels in a way that protects and is accountable to workers and communities dependent on high carbon industries;
  • Redirect subsidies for oil and gas extraction towards creating decent jobs in renewable energy, supporting local supply chains and retooling workplaces;
  • Invest in a renewables-powered economy, through National Investment Banks, public ownership of energy infrastructure and a Green New Deal.
