There was a ban on new incinerators put in place two years ago in Scotland, but new ones are still being built.
Loopholes in the legislation mean incinerators already in the planning system can evade the ban. Developers are racing to get them built, despite the clear evidence that Scotland does not need any more incineration capacity.
Incineration of waste emits harmful pollution, contributes to climate change, and prevents effective reuse and recycling.
The Scottish Government has the power to stop this from happening, but they are currently refusing to intervene. They must act now to prevent unnecessary incinerators from being built.
The Scottish Government can direct SEPA, the environmental regulator, to refuse incineration permits. Incinerators cannot operate in Scotland without these permits. Ministers need to take this course of action urgently, or we risk our valuable resources being sent up in smoke for decades to come.
Ask your MSP to call on the Scottish Government to immediately direct SEPA to refuse new permits for new and expanded incineration plants.
