In these polarising times it can feel harder than ever to connect with people we don’t know. At the same time, many local groups are struggling with low numbers and burnout.
We are bringing together people from the climate, migrant and social justice movements to connect and share skills in a day of practical and fun workshops. This day is for anyone who is interested in these movements, whether you're brand new to organising or you're an old hand who wants to get back into it.
We will have a shared lunch together, and space to meet and connect with people from different groups in Glasgow. This is a free event, with childcare at the venue, as well as a dedicated quiet/prayer space. Transport costs covered for anyone who needs it. There will be sessions on:
- Having difficult conversations with people who disagree with you
- Keeping ourselves safe
- Doorknocking, stalls and community engagement tactics
- How to build our groups and keep people engaged
- Making posters and holding a welcoming community event
The rise of far right violence and narratives that scapegoat migrant communities and push climate denial into the mainstream needs a collective response, rooted in local organising and community connection, to build power and deradicalise people at risk of being recruited by the far right.
What builds people power is local organising: street by street, community by community. To be able to do this effectively, we need to build more capacity and connectivity across our local groups, and then get out there, talk to other people and bring them along too.
We know from countless examples throughout history that when we work together, we win. From the fights for civil rights to climate targets, to Mary Barbour’s rent strikes here in Glasgow, building people power and standing in solidarity with each other has brought us closer to the world we want.
With the Scottish Parliament elections looming, now more than ever it’s time to get active in our communities, stand up for each other and build hope and community in the face of the far right.
